Suunto accelerates in digital with a new Mobile Competence Center

Suunto has expanded its operations in Finland and opened a new Mobile Competence Center in Tampere, Finland to develop digital services and native applications for both iOS and Android.
The role of mobile applications in Suunto's product and service offering has grown rapidly during the last years. For example, Suunto Ambit sports watches are already seamlessly connected to the easy-to-use Suunto Movescount mobile app and cloud service.

"Mobile applications and solutions are an important part of Suunto's future customer experience. This is the reason we decided to make a step-change in service development and start the Mobile Competence Center", says Mikko Moilanen, President of Suunto.

Moilanen emphasizes the mobile service development that takes place at Suunto is in the core of Amer Sports´ Connected Digital Ecosystem strategy announced in 2014.

The ecosystem is founded on digitally connected products and new digital services.

"Amer Sports and Suunto develop wearable technology with embedded digital sensors, connected products, and digital services. We will transform from a product-oriented company to a service and solution provider", says Moilanen.

The new Mobile Competence Center in Tampere started on August 10th.

"Tampere has a huge potential, a lot of competence and skilled people", Moilanen says.

Amer Sports recently acquired Sports Tracker, the original digital sports tracking service. A part of the Sports Tracker team is already located in Tampere.

The Head of the Mobile Competence Center is Sami Männistö. He has a long experience in international software development and mobile and web service start-ups.

"We will immediately start recruiting both Android and iOS experts to the new unit, and during this autumn the aim is to increase the size of the unit to about ten persons", says Männistö.

The Mobile Competence Center is located in the Technopolis center, close to the Tampere University of Technology.
